It's a bit weird not celebrating my birthday with the family. I suppose it doesn't always fall during a break, but it tends to. Whatever the case, I'm seventeen now? Merlin, that sounds so old compared to sixteen, doesn't it?
Oh, and happy birthday, Jacob. I know it's your birthday, too!

I haven't decided whether or not I'll be going home for the spring break. There's some pretty cool stuff going on with Dad's work, but it's all very sensitive, so Dad probably wouldn't let me do much anyway. I'm sure they'll need help around the castle, too, and Ben will probably still be here... I don't know if that'll make Mum upset, though. Do you think so, Amanda?
Is everyone else going home?

It's been nice being home for the holidays. I've almost finished my Christmas shopping. I know it's getting to be late, but Merlin, some people are hard to shop for!
Dad's been taking me to work every day, and it's been so fantastic! Now that I'm getting older, he's been letting me help out more instead of just watching. I think he's excited that I'm following in his footsteps, though I think Mum's a bit terrified that I'll get burned alive, which is silly. I think she thought the new make-up meant I was choosing a more... feminine profession

Mum sent me a dress last minute. This is it. It's nice and simple, I suppose. I wouldn't want anything overly dressy.

Finals start tomorrow. Oh Merlin. I'm so nervous. What if I'm sitting there, and I just go completely blank, and I fail all my OWLS? Mum and Dad would be so embarrassed. I'd be so embarrassed.

The new Dragons Species of Great Britain and Ireland turned out to be just as fantastic as I thought it'd be! They've added in so much new information! I don't want to spoil it for anyone or anything, but they've added some fantastic new photographs and the organization is so much more efficient.
Chase, if you still want to read it, you can borrow it!
Merlin, I've been craving pumpkin juice lately, but I've been refusing to drink it with everything that's been happening lately. Nothing's happened in a while, I suppose, so I might risk a drink at dinner. Knowing my luck, I'll probably fall in love with a toad or something ridiculous.

They're coming out with a new edition of Dragons Species of Great Britain and Ireland. It's supposed to contain all kinds of new information, and word is they've even added in a species they believed to be extinct! Can you imagine how exciting it must have been to have found something like that? A species of dragon the world thought they'd never get to see again!
I'm going to buy it at the next Hogsmeade trip and probably a few others, if anyone wants to borrow it when I'm finished. It won't take me long, I'm sure! Although I may want to reread it a few times before letting it go.

I don’t understand what the headmaster is trying to prove with all the balls this year. Doesn’t he realize how much all of this planning is taking away from our studying? Maybe the rest of the student body is okay with failing their OWL exams, but I am not. How many pages could someone have read while they were deciding which dress to wear? Or maybe this is some bizarre scheme of his to test our resolve. It’d actually be quite clever of him.
Are these balls really worth all the excitement they stir up, anyway? You go into a crowded room and dance. What’s so great about dancing? Most guys don’t really know how to dance anyway. Right?
I’ll be spending the evening in the library, studying. And everyone else can feel free to join me.
